A weather app can show you a map. A real preflight weather briefing helps you decide whether the flight makes sense.
That difference matters. The goal is not to collect every chart. It is to find the conditions that could change your route, timing, fuel plan, or go/no-go decision.
This checklist gives student pilots a repeatable way to brief the weather without getting buried in data. Use it with your instructor's procedures and the resources approved for your operation.
What the FAA Expects Before Flight
Under 14 CFR 91.103, the pilot in command must become familiar with all available information concerning the flight before departure.
For a flight away from the airport vicinity, that information includes weather reports and forecasts, fuel requirements, alternatives, and known traffic delays.
The rule sets the responsibility. AC 91-92 gives pilots a practical briefing framework.
The FAA also says a pilot can receive a regulatory-compliant briefing without contacting Flight Service. The important part is using reliable information and building a complete picture.
Choose the Right Briefing Type
If you use Flight Service, ask for the package that matches where you are in the planning cycle. The FAA defines three basic briefing packages.
Outlook briefing
Use an outlook briefing for early planning when departure is six hours or more away. It helps you see whether a weather system, front, or broad hazard may affect the flight.
An outlook is not the last look before departure. Forecasts and airport conditions may change before you fly.
Standard briefing
Use a standard briefing within six hours of departure when you need a complete and detailed picture for the intended flight.
This is the starting point when you have not already received a previous briefing or complete preliminary information.
Abbreviated briefing
Use an abbreviated briefing to update a previous briefing or request specific missing information. Tell the briefer when and where you received the earlier information.
Abbreviated does not mean casual. It means the full picture already exists and you are checking what changed.
Gather the Flight Details First
Weather only makes sense in the context of a specific flight. Before opening charts or calling Flight Service, write down:
- VFR or IFR
- Aircraft type and identification
- Departure, route, and destination
- Planned altitude
- Estimated departure time
- Estimated time en route
- Fuel endurance and realistic alternates
These details match the background information the AIM recommends providing when requesting a briefing.
A route without a time is incomplete. A forecast that is acceptable at 1500Z may not support the same flight at 2100Z.
Build the Briefing in Layers
Do not begin by decoding one METAR. Start wide, then narrow the picture to your route, airports, and departure time.
1. Start with the big picture
Identify fronts, pressure systems, widespread cloud cover, precipitation, and areas of strong wind. Ask what is moving, how fast, and whether the trend helps or hurts your plan.

2. Check hazards along the route
Review applicable SIGMETs, convective SIGMETs, and G-AIRMETs. Look for thunderstorms, icing, turbulence, mountain obscuration, low ceilings, and restricted visibility.
Do not stop after finding that a hazard exists. Compare its location, altitude, movement, and valid time with your planned route and schedule.
3. Review departure, en route, and destination weather
Read current observations near the route, then compare them with forecasts. Look for trends across several stations instead of treating one airport as the whole picture.
Ask whether ceilings and visibility are improving, steady, or deteriorating. Check surface winds and gusts against runway orientation and your personal crosswind limit.
4. Add pilot reports and radar
PIREPs can show what pilots encountered, but an empty map does not prove smooth air or clear skies. There may simply be no recent reports for your route and altitude.
Use radar to see precipitation coverage and movement. Remember that radar is one layer of the briefing, not a complete weather decision by itself.
5. Finish with operational information
A complete preflight picture includes more than weather. Review NOTAMs, TFRs, runway availability, airport services, chart currency, and any delays that could affect the flight.
If an item is unclear, ask Flight Service or your instructor. The lazy answer is not to guess; it is to resolve the one uncertainty that could invalidate the plan.
Turn Information Into a Go/No-Go Decision
A briefing is useful only when it changes a decision. For each meaningful hazard, answer four questions:
- Where is it relative to the route?
- When will it affect the flight?
- What is the aircraft and pilot exposure?
- What change would keep the flight within safe limits?
That change might be a later departure, a different altitude, a shorter route, more fuel, a better alternate, or a no-go.
Compare the forecast with written personal minimums. Do not move a limit because the airplane is booked, a passenger is waiting, or the destination weather is almost good enough.
Build clear triggers before departure. For example: if the ceiling falls below your training minimum, the gust spread grows beyond your limit, or the escape route closes, the flight does not launch.
Update the Briefing Before and During Flight
Weather briefing is a process, not a timestamp. Recheck adverse conditions, observations, forecasts, winds, and NOTAMs close to departure.
The FAA encourages pilots to use Flight Service in a consultative role when needed. A briefer can help identify what changed or direct you to information you may have missed.
In flight, compare actual conditions with the forecast. Use available ATC, Flight Service, ADS-B weather, and pilot reports to keep the picture current.
Datalink weather is valuable for strategic decisions, but it is not a tool for close tactical maneuvering around fast-changing hazards. Leave room to turn around, divert, or land before the margin disappears.
A Repeatable Student Pilot Checklist
Use this sequence until it becomes habit:
1. Define the route, altitude, timing, fuel, and alternates.
2. Check the broad weather pattern and major hazards.
3. Review route and airport observations and forecasts.
4. Add winds, PIREPs, radar, and operational notices.
5. Compare conditions with aircraft limits and personal minimums.
6. Name the hazards, escape options, and no-go triggers.
7. Update the briefing near departure and monitor changes en route.
Save the route, time, sources, and decision notes in a format you can review with your instructor. The value is not proving you looked at weather. It is making your reasoning visible.
